Given the inherent risks in the use of complex technologies in healthcare settings, The AAMI Foundation launched a national coalition focused on provider preparation for utilizing complex healthcare technology. This 2-year initiative brings together a diverse group of stakeholders ranging from national nursing organizations, to regulatory bodies such as CMS, FDA, TJC, to industry partners and other like-minded patient safety organizations.  It is addressing the challenges associated with introducing complex healthcare technology to clinicians, including:

  • Limited time for training based on competing priorities;
  • Lack of standardization for assessing competency;
  • Human factors issue with the technology; and,
  • Growing number of complex devices as technology evolves.
